Early morning, I was ordered (:P) into starting this thread on SNOBS. The blog post linked on the thread was a rather controversial view of the history of the Indian sub-continent by V. S. Naipaul. It was explosive material, so it was thought that the dormant crowd at SNOBS would be awakened and would post something. Well we did get some posts- but thanks to the protagonists, the nature of thread made me want to strew them all over the place! Anyways – an opportunity for a good discussion squandered.
The two main things that struck me after reading Naipaul’s views were these:
- Why is it forgotten that while Ghazni and likes did plunder and loot the civilizations in India- Islam was not responsible…the spread of Islam among the masses owed more to the peaceful preaching of the Sufis and the Saints rather to the swords of these conquerors. So isn’t this a somewhat crude reading of history?
- Secondly, would these view still have been harboured- had there been no “Pakistan”? Where would all this anger (and blame) be directed then? Is it more pronounced now, because India had to go through the harsh experience of partition?
Oh well, there might still be some good discussion on the thread…

Firstly by linking to that blog, you have added your bit in legitimizing it 😀
It’s true that Ghaznavi and Ghauri don’t enjoy that much popularity in India (for obvious reasons). However other islamic rulers like Akbar, Tipu Sultan and Sirajudaulla are revered as heroes of the nation. So your extrapolation to Islam in general may be a bit far fetched.
As to your second point regarding, venting anger. May be a bit more westwards? 😛

actually its not far-strechted – thats the impression i got after reading his views on various issues. but maybe mine too might be somewhat of a knee-jerk impression, as certain of his views seem to be 😛

Ahh. Crap propoganda by Muslims in general from the sub – continent. Just a lame excuse that Islam didn’t spread by the sword. Aurangzeb, Babar and Ghazni are some examples. Just tell me the number of times that Dwarka was looted by that Ghazni?

In general, Hindus hate Muslims( atleast in India). We do not show it coz Muslims are a strong block of guys.
Indians do not hate Pakistan. Coz Pakistan was the creation of a few fools ( Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah) and there are more things concerning Indians than Pakistan. Most of Indians would want peace with Pakistan and final acceptance of the LoC as the border. Me being a Sindhi myself don’t care what Pakistan does as long as it doesn’t harm India and the world in general. The current Indian hate for Pak comes from the terrorist camps operating on Pakistani soil( u being an orkuter must be knowing all those hate comms. from Pakistanis as well as Indians)
